What is a School Counselor?

School counselors work with all students, school staff, families and members of the community as a fundamental part of the education program in maximizing student success. Through advocacy, collaboration, and consultation, School Counselors promote school success through a focus on academic achievement, prevention and intervention activities, social/emotional and career development

Services and Programs Offered

Academic Achievement

  • Provide academic support including organizational, study and test-taking skills
  • Goal setting and decision making
  • Transition plans
  • Collaboration and consultation with parents, teachers and staff to identify and remove barriers to learning

Personal/Social Development

  • Individual counseling (Short term)
  • Peer relationships, coping strategies and effective social skills
  • Communication, problem-solving and conflict resolution
  • Education on understanding of self, including strengths and weaknesses
  • Issues with anxiety

Career Development

  • High School exploration/awareness
  • College exploration/awareness
  • Career exploration/awareness
